From the Bride-to-be (Najin): In October 2013, Lawrence drove me to Southlands Heritage Farm to hunt for the the perfect pumpkin to carve. The farm was so charming and there was a grassy knoll in between a horse-riding-arena and sheep barn. To my surprise, there were tealights in mason jars encircling the spot where he popped the question! There were literally sheeps “baa-ing” in the distance as I said “yes!” and a nearby cowboy took our photo. It was a truly comical and special moment for us both.”
Inspiration behind the shoot
Najin: I wish we say we chose this theme because we’re both literature nuts. The truth is…Lawrence and I come from such starkly different backgrounds and upbringings that it simply adds up to an interesting story. What better place for storytelling exists than a bookshop! We especially love that used bookshops are a museum of previously-owned belongings to an even wider spectrum of people and their own stories.
Thoughts from the photographer
BAKEPHOTOGRAPHY: When Najin and Lawrence suggested that we shoot their engagement session in a vintage bookstore I was very excited about the idea. The fact that the name of the bookstore is “Lawrence Books” was perfect. I knew it was going to be a fun photoshoot!
The owners of the bookstore were so accommodating and let us have the place to ourselves. We felt like we were exploring in a book museum as we picked out our favourite books to feature in the photos.
This theme allowed for a variety of fun and creative images along with the opportunity for Najin and Lawrence to connect with one another. It was also cherry blossom season in Vancouver and the couple wanted to include some outdoor photos in the session, so we went to Queen Elizabeth Park to take advantage of the amazing trees. It is one of the best places in Vancouver to see the blossoms!
BAKEPHOTOGRAPHY: I wanted to show the couple’s personality through the images, so I gave them a task when we first walked in the bookstore. I asked them to choose books with titles that might reflect their relationship, or how they were feeling at the time.
They have been so busy planning their wedding, so it was a nice time for them to take a break and focus on them and their personal story. I wanted to showcase the bookstore itself along with the couple, so we went from section to section and shot a variety of images. They were so fun and easy going. We had a fantastic time!
